POLICE COMPLAINTS AUTHORITY TO SUPERVISE INVESTIGATION INTO WEST LONDON DEATH The independent Police Complaints Authority is to supervise the investigation into the death of a man in Hammersmith, West London this morning. A member of the public had called the Metropolitan Police Service to report a man who was wielding a knife. The man, thought to be in his thirties, was arrested after C S spray and batons were used. He was taken to Hammersmith police station at approximately 8.30 a.m. The man was being examined by a force medical examiner when he collapsed at 8.55 a.m. Resuscitation was attempted and he was taken by ambulance to New Charing Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9.45 a.m. The Metropolitan Police voluntarily referred the incident to the PCA. Authority member Mrs Caroline Mitchell has gone to Hammersmith. Mrs Mitchell said: "We are seeking an investigating officer from Avon and Somerset Constabulary. I will ensure that the inquiry into this death is carried out impartially and thoroughly." Update The investigating officer is Detective Chief inspector Rod Hanson from Avon and Somerset Constabulary.
